Sevenoaks Soroptimists’ jewels stamp out killer disease

Sevenoaks Soroptimists are delighted to send £863 towards the Licking Lassa Fever Appeal which is undertaking such invaluable work in Sierra Leone.

The money was raised after members and friends cleared out their cupboards and produced an amazing amount of unwanted jewellery.

The group also made an appeal through the local paper the Sevenoaks Chronicle, which very kindly included a news piece in their columns and acted as a collection point for readers’ jewellery. This really seemed to inspire local people and again produced an overwhelming amount of bounty.

Afterwards all the good pieces were sold at local jewellers and some other unwanted costume jewellery is being forwarded on to SI Wales South (SIWS) to go in the pot for their regional project.

Sevenoaks organiser Janet Weston said: “It is imperative that we try and stamp out this lethal killer disease.

“Collecting the jewellery has been a very simple thing to do and has also been great fun. If they have not already done so, I would urge other clubs to do the same.

“Even damaged, broken and incomplete jewellery will help; so all odd earings, broken chains and watches which have stopped are a great start. Costume jewellery is welcome as well as gold and silver.”
